Fine Detail Processing has been enhanced to suppress false colors and moire while maintaining high resolution. This camera is also equipped with low-passless compatible moire removing processing.

High-speed, high-precision Dual FAST AF
Dual FAST AF is made possible by Contrast detection AF and On-chip Phase Detection AF. On-chip Phase Detection AF is used when a Four Thirds lens is attached, and both Contrast detection AF and On-chip Phase Detection AF are used when a Micro Four Thirds lens is attached for high-speed, high-precision autofocusing.

This model is also equipped with 81 point Contrast detection AF and 37 point On-chip Phase Detection AF for autofocusing on minute points in a wide area. Small Target AF carries out pinpoint AF, and Group Target AF can be specified for a larger AF area. The AF system, which incorporates On-chip Phase Detection AF, can also be used for comfortable use of Four Thirds lenses. This model is also equipped with Touch AF Shutter which boasts excellent response. Simply touch the subject on the rear monitor for intuitive shooting that exactly matches your intentions.
Approx. 6.5 fps*, 50 frame RAW sequential shooting
High-speed sequential shooting with AF tracking is available (at C-AF) with a maximum frame rate of 6.5 fps* and approximately 50 shots in RAW (continuous shooting time approx. 8 sec.). With this feature, you can continue tracking back and forth moving subjects such as people in sporting events or animals while enjoying high-speed sequential shooting. Sequential H enables high-speed sequential shooting at approximately 10 fps, making it possible to capture the wing beats of a bird. (The focus is locked at the first shot)

Super Spot AF makes it possible to pinpoint on minute subjects
Super Spot AF magnifies specified areas and autofocuses on points in the center of the frame only. Powerful image stabilization is activated during magnified display for a stable viewfinder image making it the perfect function for macro or telephoto shooting.

Small AF target
This camera is equipped with Small Target AF for reducing the AF target size. Because AF areas with a smaller surface focus area can be selected for each point, pinpoint focusing on even smaller areas is possible.
Face detection AF / Eye detect AF
Not only can this feature focus on faces, it can also automatically zoom for close-ups and focus on eyes. When the high-precision eye priority AF and e-Portrait functions for making skin look bringer and smoother are combined, they are perfect for quick and easy snapshot portraits in the city and for capturing shots of children. This allows you to focus on eyes for a natural expression and an easy shot. The E-M1 includes e-Portrait as a Picture Mode.
Super large screen/super high-definition EVF
This camera is equipped with a 1.48x (35mm conversion: 0.74), super large screen and 2.36 million dot super high-resolution electronic viewfinder that rivals full-size DSLR models. Tracking of moving subjects is improved by reducing the switching time between the rear monitor and EVF, as well as an accelerated display (display time lag 0.029 sec.). Adaptive Brightness Technology is included for a natural view that is like an optical viewfinder, as well as LV Dynamic Range Expansion. Color Creator has been added to Creative Control, controls that are only possible on an EVF. EVF possibilities are increasing.
Adaptive Brightness Technology enables automatic backlight control
Due to the eye's adaptation to brightness, the EVF display image appears dark in bright locations, and appears bright in dark locations. Adaptive Brightness Technology is included to reduce visual errors resulting from these types of eye adaptations, automatically adjusting the EVF brightness. This function brightens the backlight in bright locations, and darkens it in darker locations, thereby preventing unnecessary exposure compensation due to visual errors, letting you shoot naturally and intuitively, just as when using an optical viewfinder.
In bright conditions
When one of the in-camera HDR processing modes is selected (HDR1 is natural dynamic range expansion and HDR2 creates painterly images), the image equivalent to the one processed by the HDR1 mode can be displayed. This feature provides a view closer to optical viewfinders.
Color Creator lets you control colors as you feel
Using the newly added "Color Creator," you can express impressive scenes in an impressive way. Color Creator is added as part of the "Creative Control" feature that lets you control four functions necessary for image creation (composition, focus, tones and color) while looking through the viewfinder. It is completely different form conventional white balance compensation, and lets you dynamically control "hue" (30 steps) and "color saturation" (8 steps including the reference point).This feature lets you artistically express your feelings as a designer. That is "Color Creator".

Three user-selectable finder styles
You can choose one of the three finder styles such as the OM style. The finder magnification ratio of the OM style viewfinder has been improved by reviewing the GUI (1.3 x ). The OM style is also available when the eye sensor is turned off now.
Instant switching between the EVF and the backside monitor
The eye sensor automatically switches the display between the EVF and LCD screen. The eye sensor automatically switches the picture to the EVF when you look at it and is done momentarily. That way, it guarantees stress-free shooting operation.
Convenient basic functions
Built-in Wi-Fi and OLYMPUS Image Share
It features Wi-Fi so that you can connect to OLYMPUS Image Share (smartphone application) to transfer images from the camera. In addition, you can add the GPS log of your smartphone to images in the camera. The wireless touch AF shutter allows you to shoot remotely using the smartphone.

12 art filters that expand your photographic expressions.
Art filters expand your artistic expressions. The new art filter mode "Diorama II" has been added to the E-M1. It uses the focus point as the central point and gradually blurs the left and right part of an image. This feature can provides the diorama effect for vertical panorama shots.

Art Effects make art filters even more fascinating. New "Blur Art Effect" that blurs the left/right or upper/lower part of the focus point is added to the E-M1. This effect can also be used for other art filters than Diorama to create a surreal miniature world. Moreover, you can use this effect in combination with the Eye Detection AF to blur the left/right or upper/lower part of an image using the focused eye as the central point to create a portrait image with an impressive depth of field.
Photo Story: New type of a photographic expression
Photo Story provides a new way of a photographic expression by collecting multiple usual everyday photos to create a story. You can combine multiple photos while accentuate compositions and colors just by touching the back panel to create art work. Three types of frames, namely, Standard, Fun Frames, and Speed are provided. This feature turns everyday photos into art work in a form that has never been done before. It is unique to OLYMPUS. We believe in the value of self-expression through photographs.
Mechanical shutter with fast shutter speed (1/8000 sec.) and ISO LOW mode (ISO 100)
1/8000 sec. shutter speed and ISO LOW (equivalent to ISO100) settings are now available. Objects with very rapid movement can be captured as a still image with the faster shutter speed. The wide aperture of fast lenses can also be used during day time without an ND filter to take photos with a beautiful defocused background.
High-Speed Release Time Lag Mode that provides a very quick response
Equipped with Short Release Time Lag Mode, which reduces the release time lag. It is very effective when shooting rapidly moving objects.
- * The minimum time lag when the release mode is "Short" and the image stabilizer is turned off during half-pressing is approximately 0.044 sec.
- * The number of maximum shots is reduced by about 60 (based on CIPA standards).
The live view screen is updated at a set interval during exposure. There are two modes: Live Bulb opens the shutter while release button is pressed and Live Time opens the shutter on the first push and closes it on the second push. During Live Bulb mode, the exposure time and histogram are displayed on the screen. When the Bulb/Time shooting mode is selected, the backlight is automatically dimmed to reduce the power consumption and brightness.
Interval Shooting/Time Lapse Movie
The interval shooting feature lets you capture blooming flowers, the flow of people and the movement of stars from the fixed point. It automatically performs continuous shooting once you set the number of total shots and the interval (from one second to 24 hours). Also, it can automatically create a time-lapse video from the captured images.* The maximum length of the video is 100 sec. (when 999 shots are taken). This feature lets you create a stop-motion like video from continuous shots.
Focus Peak lets you take snapshots with MF lenses easily
Sharp edges in the image are highlighted in black or white to let you see which part of the image is being focused. The faster display speed provides better usability. You can assign this feature to one of the buttons to show/hide the peaking indication with a single press of the button, so that you can easily check both focus and composition. You can also assign the display magnification feature to another button to check the focus more accurately and switch between the peaking indication and magnified display freely. Moreover, by combining this feature with the 5-axis image stabilization feature, you can take snapshots with MF lenses with incredible ease.
Two HDR shooting modes and HDR-BKT
The camera takes four shots with different exposures during one shutter release and performs HDR processing to create an HDR image. Two modes are available: the HDR1 mode provides naturally expanded dynamic range, while the HDR2 provides artistic, painterly images. If you prefer to perform HDR processing on your PC, the HDR bracket feature that lets you capture multiple brackets is also available as before.

Hand-Held Starlight shooting mode
The handheld night scene mode has been added. In this mode, the camera takes 8 shots during one shutter release to create a composite image with less noise.
One Push 2x Digital Converter
It provides a telephoto effect simply by magnifying the central part of an image two times. You can use it very easily, for example, by assigning it to the Fn button. Thanks to the advanced image compensation performance of the image processing engine, up to 1200mm (in 35mm terms) of telephoto shooting is possible (when the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm F4.8-6.7II is used).
Full HD Movie
The full HD video shooting feature lets you use techniques unique to DSLRs such as lens characteristics and defocusing the background. It provides smooth beautiful images and high-quality stereo recording features. Since the touch AF can be used in this mode, you can freely change the focus point as you like.
- * Using memory cards with an SD Speed Class 6 or better is recommended for recording movies.
- * The image is enlarged by a small amount if image stabilization is used during video shooting. Too much camera shake may not be compensated.
The Movie Effect feature adds effects to HD videos. Multi Echo creates motion trails. One Shot Echo captures the image when the button is pressed and shows it as a trail. Art Fade lets you shoot a video with the effect of the selected picture mode. Movie Tele-converter magnifies a given part of the image by 4 times in an instant moment. Any of these effects can be operated by touching the screen.

"Dial Myset" / "Button Myset" let you customize settings according to your shooting style
You can create up to 4 mysets and assign them to any of the modes on the dial. By allocating the mysets to mode dial positions with low frequency of use, you can customize the mode dial according to your favorite shooting style. Moreover if you register a myset with a button such as Fn button, you can recall the myset with a single press of the button.
Digital Level Gauge
The tilt and horizontal directions level meters can be displayed. They are useful when there is no horizontal line in the frame or the screen is too dark to check the composition. Major parameters such as the aperture and shutter speed can also be displayed together with the level meters. You can also replace the exposure indicator with the level meter display* during the half shutter button (one axis).
Tilting LCD monitor
Equipped with a tiltable touch panel LCD monitor with high color reproducibility and contrast. The monitor is a capacitance touch panel coated with fingerprint resistant finishing and has very good response. It can be tilted upward to 80 degrees and downward to 50 degrees. It gives you more shooting chances, for example, a high-angle shooting is useful when taking photos in a crowd (e.g. sports event) and a low-angle shooting is useful for taking photos of children and pets. Because the eye sensor is automatically turned off when the back monitor is pulled out, you can now perform touch shooting more easily.
OLYMPUS Viewer 3 enhances your work flow in the digital domain
Numerous settings (for example, Color Creator and Highlight & Shadow Control settings) set during shooting can be reflected when processing RAW files with OLYMPUS Viewer 3. You can also use OI.Share (smartphone app) to use GPS tags attached to photos to map the photos and display your logs.
