Like an artist, a photographer’s vision shouldn’t be limited by his tools. Which is why we’ve created a DX-format DSLR that’s more intuitive than ever. The D5500 is thoughtfully designed with an intelligent eye sensor, vast improvements in image review, and a versatile touch screen vari-angle monitor to make it even easier for you to chase your creative pursuits. Its 24.2-megapixel image sensor without an optical low-pass filter (OLPF), is complemented with a powerful EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, all packed in a compact, lightweight body that offers a stronger, more secure grip. Built-in Wi-Fi® allows you to upload your impressive images seamlessly, so you can share your passion for photography with other like-minded enthusiasts.

Follow your creative instincts with a new world of intuitive features

A first for Nikon DSLRs, the D5500 features a touch screen vari-angle LCD monitor for limitless fun and creative shooting possibilities with easier handling. Flip out the large 3.2-inch display for an interesting new angle, then simply touch where you want to focus and shoot. The intuitive eye sensor switches off the information display when you bring the viewfinder to your eye and a new Touch Function gives you one-touch easy access to autofocus-area and aperture settings.  With 6 information display designs to choose from, you can finally customise the ideal look on your monitor.

Let your creativity shine through higher image quality

At 24.2 megapixels without an optical low-pass filter (OLPF), the D5500 captures remarkably beautiful images. Its extensive dynamic range (ISO 100 to 25600) and low noise even at high ISO delivers rich gradation and sharp colour rendering, shot after shot. This is perfectly accompanied by higher quality, resolution, and speed from an EXPEED 4 image-processing engine to capture more of what you see in full glory.

Capture your imagination, now with pin-point precision

Tracking your subject and keeping it at the centre of attention is now a breeze with a superior 39-point autofocus (AF) system. The speed of contrast-detect AF has also been vastly improved to achieve quicker focusing. Capturing your subject at great speeds is also easily achieved by shooting at an impressive 5 frames per second*1.

Power in the camera, comfort in your hands

As the world’s smallest and lightest Nikon DX-format camera*2, the D5500 measures just 124mm (width) x 97mm (height) x 70mm (depth) and weighs only 420g. It’s strengthened with a carbon fiber composite material*3 that’s as strong as metal. The revolutionary monocoque structure lightens the body of the camera, without adding unnecessary weight to the device. What makes it even easier to use is an ergonomic design that allows for better grip, giving you greater comfort in your hands. Sturdy yet stylish, the D5500 is available in classic black and chic red.

Bring your artistic vision to life

A first for DX-format cameras, the D5500 provides Vignette Control that efficiently compensates peripheral light fall-off for well-balanced brightness. Let your imagination lead the way with Special Effects, an exclusive mode that enables you to intensify the beauty of your image through colour, lighting and artistic styles. You can also adjust details such as White Balance and Picture Control during live view, right from your monitor.

Operation at a touch

Touch screen

First-time D-SLR users will feel right at home with the D5500. The camera’s touch-screen interface makes a range of operations incredibly intuitive to use. During live view with the vari-angle monitor, simply touch anywhere on the screen to focus, then release your finger to shoot*. You can also tap the screen to focus during movie recording, and use it to adjust settings like aperture and shutter speed whether in live view or viewfinder photography. Browsing through menus only takes a flick of a finger, and you can swipe left and right to move between pictures in playback, and pinch in and out to zoom.
If you’re worried about mistakes happening while shooting, there’s an option to activate the touch screen during playback only. And of course, buttons are also available for conventional operation.

* Shooting by pressing the shutter-release button is also possible even after touch focusing.

Share with friends, wherever you are

Share and shoot via built-in Wi-Fi/Wireless Mobile Utility/NIKON IMAGE SPACE

Why keep amazing, D-SLR-quality pictures to yourself? Using built-in Wi-Fi, it’s easy to transfer images from the D5500 to smart devices installed with Wireless Mobile Utility*. You can then share them on social media or online services like NIKON IMAGE SPACE, which gives Nikon camera owners 20 GB of storage for free.
It’s also possible to shoot remotely with your smart device, allowing you to release the shutter after checking the image on the device’s screen – perfect for self-portraits.

* Can be downloaded free from application stores.

Designed to be taken anywhere

Slim, lightweight, carbon-fiber monocoque body with deep grip/Sophisticated exterior

Pick up the D5500, and you might be surprised by how small and light it is, while still offering a deep grip that’s stable and comfortable in anyone’s hand.
The body incorporates a carbon-fiber composite material that’s strong and durable, but also remarkably lightweight. This provides the basis for an innovative monocoque structure, where the exterior covers support the interior, doing away with the bulky, skeletal framework that’s used in most D-SLRs. The layout of the internal unit has also been redesigned to achieve a slim body with an easy-to-hold grip.
It’s a stylish camera too, with a well-integrated surface, buttons and dials, and high-quality finish. Meanwhile, the supplied EN-EL14a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery gets you approx. 820 still shots per charge* in single-frame release mode. Combined with the new AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II with retractable lens barrel, the D5500 makes for an amazingly portable camera system, which you’ll want to take out everywhere.

* Based on CIPA Standards.

Enrich your memory with location data

GP-1/GP-1A GPS Unit (optional)

Add location data to your pictures to keep a more detailed record of your activities. Attaching the optional GP-1/GP-1A GPS Unit to the D5500 enables information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) to be stored as Exif data in the pictures. These can then be pinpointed on the map incorporated in ViewNX 2* and the NIKON IMAGE SPACE image-sharing service, or with other digital mapping software or online services.

* Available for free download from Nikon websites.

Simple and intuitive interface in six variations

Information display

During viewfinder shooting, you can confirm your settings visually by pressing the information button. The D5500’s touch-operated information display comes in two designs (classic and graphic) and three colors (black, blue and white). In the graphic interface, aperture changes are displayed in pictorial form, making it particularly intuitive to use.

Shortcut for changing settings quickly

i button

The i button makes handling even smoother by giving you direct access to your most frequently used settings, without having to use a menu. Options include Picture Control and HDR. During image playback, you can use the i button to jump to the retouch menu or select the images you want to send to your smart devices.

Image quality

Pictures that match the reality

Nikon DX-format CMOS image sensor/24.2 effective megapixels/EXPEED 4

Whenever you come across interesting scenes, the D5500 promises to preserve the moments of inspiration. And these aren’t just snapshots: each high-resolution image delivers a three-dimensional look, showing rich color rendition and smooth tonal gradation, without washed-out highlights or blocked shadows. That’s thanks to a combination of unrivaled Nikon technologies working together: the DX-format CMOS image sensor* delivering 24.2 effective megapixels, EXPEED 4 image-processing engine and NIKKOR lenses.

* Designed without an optical low-pass filter (OLPF). This fully brings out the resolving power of the high-pixel-count image sensor, combined with a more faithful rendering from NIKKOR lenses, delivering exquisite detail reproduction.

Moving in low light? No problem

Standard ISO from 100 to 25600 with superb noise reduction

When light is beautiful but scarce, such as during sunset and sunrise, the D5500’s wide standard ISO range of 100 to 25600, combined with its noise-reduction function, allows you to keep shooting crisp, clean images. Using a high ISO setting enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds, letting you take blur-free pictures with less noise at indoor events and parties without using a flash.

Bring the ideal look to each scene

Picture Control system

Tailor your still images and movies according to what you want to express by using the D5500’s built-in Picture Controls. Choose from Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape and Flat, a new option that provides you with optimal material for post-shoot editing. You can also adjust the parameter settings for preset options – including Sharpness, Contrast and the newly added Clarity – within the camera, and save them for future shoots.

Seven modes that bring the world in line with your vision

For optimal results with a wide range of subjects, including portraits and landscapes, use Standard. This versatile mode optimizes each setting, such as Sharpening, Contrast and Brightness, to produce well-balanced images – whatever you’re shooting.

Neutral renders subjects more closely to what you see, delivering rich gradation and natural colors. While this option can also be used for post-shoot editing, like Flat, it achieves soothing, soft pictures even without editing.

Flat provides optimal material for post-shoot image editing. From highlights to shadows, it retains rich image information, meaning you can adjust brightness and color tones as much as you need, without worrying about overblown highlights, blocked-up shadows or excessive color saturation.

As the name suggests, this is the ideal choice for portraits, combining the sharp rendering of Standard with smoother, more natural skin tones. But it doesn’t stop there: Portrait can also be used to bring a gentler appearance to flowers, landscapes and even architecture.

Landscape emphasizes the depth and richness of the color tones in skies and flora, and captures cityscapes with a solid feel of textures. However, it’s also worth applying to other subjects, to find a new look for them.

Vivid lends a dash of glamour to your subject, emphasizing the contours and contrast to produce distinctive, vibrant, fresh-looking images. It’s great for creating eye-catching pictures, and can also be used to make less-colorful subjects stand out more.

From portraits to landscapes, Monochrome can bring a totally different atmosphere to your images. By restricting the tonal range with effects like black-and-white and sepia, you can create or enhance a particular mood in your shots.

Fine-tune and customize to achieve your ideal image

Adjusting and customizing Picture Controls

Fine-tune the seven preset Picture Controls to get the results you want. Parameter settings for each Picture Control, like sharpening, clarity, contrast and brightness, can be adjusted within the camera in fine increments of 0.25. The adjusted settings can then be saved to the camera as custom Picture Controls, making them available for future shoots. You can also create custom Picture Controls using Picture Control Utility 2 on a computer.

Note: Picture Control Utility 2 can be downloaded free from a Nikon website (nikonimglib.com/npcu/). It is also included on the installers for Capture NX-D and ViewNX 2 (version 2.10.0 or later) and can be launched from those applications.

Don’t let difficult lighting spoil a shot

Active D-Lighting/HDR

When shooting scenes with drastic contrasts in lighting, such as a subject backlit against the sky, the D5500 gives you two options. Active D-Lighting adjusts the contrast to render the scene in true-to-life brightness, and can be used for moving subjects. HDR* produces a single, striking image by taking two shots at different exposures with a single shutter release and combining the highlights and shadows of the two. This function works best with stationary subjects.

* Tripod recommended.

Edit images to your heart’s content

Capture NX-D/ViewNX 2

The creative process doesn’t finish with shooting. Nikon’s exclusive editing software draws out the full potential of your images. Capture NX-D enables you to obtain professional-looking results, offering a wide range of editing options for NEF images (Nikon’s RAW), such as adjusting white balance, tone curve and exposure compensation. It also allows you to change an image’s Picture Control and settings after shooting. ViewNX 2 lets you import and browse your stills and movies. Images with location data can be displayed on a digital map, and the software also incorporates movie-editing tools.

Note: Both types of software can be downloaded free from Nikon websites.

Reliable auto control thanks to detailed scene analysis

Scene Recognition System

The D5500 can adapt to a diverse array of shooting and lighting situations. Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System uses information from the camera’s 2016-pixel RGB sensor and image sensor to accurately analyze the subject’s situation, including brightness and color. This sophisticated technology realizes very precise control of autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control, auto white balance, etc.

Colors that are closer to what you see

Accurate auto white balance

White balance plays a vital role in achieving true-to-life colors in your pictures. The D5500 identifies the light source by referencing an in-camera database for accurate auto white balance.

Prevent dust from affecting your pictures

Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System

When changing lenses, sometimes dust can stick to the optical filter in front of the camera’s image sensor. The D5500 uses several preventive measures to stop such dust from causing image degradation. Its Image Sensor Cleaning function vibrates the optical filter at multiple frequencies in order to shake off dust every time the camera is switched on and off. It can also be activated using the menu. Nikon rigorously tests body parts prior to assembly to prevent dust dispersion after mounting.

Viewfinder photography and AF capability

Get an intimate view of the action

Optical viewfinder

When you’re capturing fast-moving action, you want a clear view of what’s happening. That’s when a D-SLR’s optical viewfinder comes in handy. Whether you’re shooting a sports match or a rock gig, you can follow your subjects in real time, letting you concentrate on shooting. The D5500’s newly introduced eye sensor above the viewfinder makes the shooting process even smoother. Sensing when your eye moves away from the viewfinder, the camera turns on the monitor to display the image you’ve just shot, ensuring that you don’t miss the playback.

Intuitively adjust key settings

Touch Fn

The D5500’s touch screen gives you intuitive control over important settings during viewfinder photography. The newly introduced touch Fn (function) feature lets you make adjustments to a pre-assigned camera setting using your thumb, without looking away from the viewfinder. To assign, choose one of eight frequently used settings, such as ISO sensitivity, aperture and focus point selection. Touch Fn is particularly convenient when changing a focus point, because you can simply slide your thumb to move within the 39 points.

Keep a lock on fast-moving subjects

39 focus points/Versatile AF-area modes

Some subjects move too quickly and erratically to maintain focus on. The D5500’s autofocus system helps you acquire and keep track of your target with remarkable precision, using 39 focus points that cover a wide area of the frame. Choose from multiple AF-area modes depending on what you’re shooting: single-point AF, dynamic-area AF, 3D-tracking and auto-area AF.

Seize those split-second moments

5-fps continuous shooting with full AF performance

Sometimes the best moments last for just the blink of an eye. Fortunately, thekD5500 can keep up with the action. Thanks to its high-speed continuous shooting rate of 5 frames per second (fps)*kwith full AF performance, you’ve got a much better chance of capturing the decisive moment – with vivid detail delivered by the high pixel count.

* Based on CIPA Guidelines.

Find a fresh point of view

Vari-angle monitor/Touch shutter release

Discover a new perspective on your subjects, as you shoot them creatively from high and low angles. The D5500’s vari-angle monitor ensures comfortable live view photography, whatever position you hold the camera in. The wide, 8.1-cm/3.2-in. screen opens up to 180° horizontally, and flips up and down from +180° to -90°. The touch interface makes it even easier to use, as you can simply touch to focus and release the shutter. Autofocus is accurate, with four AF-area modes available during live view shooting: face-priority AF, wide-area AF, normal-area AF and subject-tracking AF.

Give your pictures an artistic touch

Special Effects

Turn your stills and movies into unique works of art with the D5500. In live view shooting, the effects are shown in real time, allowing you to check how they’ll look before taking the shot. Combined with the multiple angles delivered by the vari-angle monitor, this gives you endless possibilities of creating unique images.

With its wide-angle to normal zoom range and compact build, this is an excellent walk-around lens. You’ll always be ready to tackle a whole host of subjects, from city shots and landscapes to family sporting events and action-packed HD movies. Whatever your subject, Nikon’s Vibration Reduction keeps images sharp even in low light situations. The streamlined design keeps the lens compact and comfortable for everyday carry.

Nikon’s new Stepping Motor focuses quickly and is ideal for shooting movies. Thanks to the new motor, this lens performs more quietly and is even faster than its predecessor. When zooming in to capture a photo, you can bring subjects into focus instantly and with absolute precision. When you’re shooting video footage, the motor allows you to smoothly shift focus from subject to subject with practically no drive noise.

This DX-format lens is specifically designed to make the most of your Nikon D-SLR’s high pixel count and advanced image sensor. Two aspherical lens elements minimise spherical aberration and other forms of distortion, so you can enjoy high-resolution photos and movies with vivid colour, striking contrast, and crisp detail.

Nikon’s impressive Vibration Reduction keeps images sharp, even in low light situations. Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, VR lets you shoot at up to four stops slower. Whether you’re taking portraits, group shots, or capturing a stunning landscape, this means you’ll be able to capture blur-free images time after time. You can turn VR on or off using the camera menu.

Switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus, and turn VR on and off using the camera menu*. With no switches on the lens barrel itself, there’s no chance of accidentally changing settings when you want to take the shot.

Ultra-compact and lightweight, this is an ideal walk-around lens. The lens body weighs just 205 g, and you can retract it to a mere 62.5 mm when it’s not in use, making it easier to carry with you everywhere you go.
